IEN, with 16-year internationalized teaching experience, is an international institute for tertiary education between MJU and public universities overseas. It is the only Sino-Foreign cooperative institute in Fujian province approved by the Ministry of Education. IEN has been upgraded to an educational reform pilot project, the institute of “Sino-Foreign cooperation to develop international talents” approved by the Educational Department in Fujian province since April 2011. IEN was granted independent legal qualification status, approved by the Fujian provincial government in March, 2015, as a Sino-Foreign cooperative running school.
IEN has purchased advanced, educational resources and launched the Sino-American International General Education Curriculum（IGEC）program and the Sino-Australian Diploma program. There are various running modes including “2+2”, “4+0”, “3+1~2”. At present, IEN offers 4 majors including Financial Services, Accounting, International Business and Marketing. There are almost 2000 full-time students. Through wildly accepted internationalized educational cooperation and exchange, IEN has built good cooperative relationships with well-known overseas universities and educational institutes, and established an international educational exchange cooperative platform --- IEN International Educational Alliance. More than 324 people from 51 overseas universities and educational institutes have held 104 exchange visits to IEN. Currently, 78 overseas universities in Australia, the United States, Canada, New Zealand, England, Germany, Singapore, Malaysia, etc. have recognized IEN credits for transfer. IEN has been the largest Sino-Foreign cooperative institution in Fujian province and sent the most students aboard.
The Distinctive International Education Program
IEN has a strategic cooperative partnership with the CSCSE (Chinese Service Center for Scholarly Exchange). Under the guidance of the CSCSE, IEN has brought in great educational resources from American universities which include Temple University, Portland State University, Lawrence Technological University, San Francisco State University, Humboldt State University, Alfred University, Gannon University, Northeastern Illinois University, University of Maryland, Baltimore County，Pacific Lutheran University, Thomas College and other universities. In addition, it became the first to hold a Sino-American IGEC program, March 2011, in China. To ensure the quality of IGEC, IEN has established teaching quality assurance procedures. Up to now, CSCSE has organized 30 experts and scholars from 18 cooperating foreign universities as well as top domestic universities like Temple University, University of Maryland, Peking University and Tsinghua University to visit IEN seven times to conduct a quality monitoring and assessment of teaching and management within the program. After assessing the management, teaching, students and courses of the program, the experts are satisfied with the IGEC program implanted by IEN. In total, 25 courses have been evaluated, of which 13 courses are satisfactory and 12 courses got passed but need improvements. The creative cultivation modes are offered in IGEC program, including “2+2” (2 years domestic study and 2 years foreign partner university study) or “4+0” (4 years domestic study). Intensive English courses will be offered to students in the first and second years, as well as general education courses and basic professional courses. For “2+2” mode, if students meet the requirements of the partner American universities, they can apply for transfer to these universities. Furthermore, students are able to receive a Bachelor’s Degree from the partner American universities after completing two-year major courses’ study. In addition, scholarships could be offered to excellent students. For the students who choose “4+0” mode, they can obtain a Bachelor’s Degree issued by MJU.
At present, 83 students from 2011 and 2012 cohort who registered in the "2+2" mode have gone to study overseas. Among them, 81 students have headed for the United States to further their studies and 2 students have chosen to study in Australia. Among the 81 students, 54 students chose to study at Temple University, 14 at Portland State University, 9 at San Francisco State University, 1 at Gannon University, 1 at Duquesne University and 2 at Northeastern Illinois University. They were recognized as outstanding students by the partner universities.
At the China Overseas Study Forum hosted by the CSCSE on March 14, 2014, Hai-Lung, Dai, Ph.D., the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs of Temple University spoke highly of the IGEC program and the students at IEN in his speech. He mentioned that half of them had already started studying their major courses and passed the exam after one-semester of study. Their average GPA is 3.29, and some of them even received 3.93 (The full mark of GPA is 4.0).
The Sino-Australia cooperative diploma program, with 16-year international teaching experience, runs “3+(1-2)” modes. Students can obtain a Diploma issued by MJU and Melbourne Polytechnic respectively after three-year studies at home. By the credits transfer method, students can study abroad for 1-2 year to get a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree. Students can also choose to receive further domestic education or employment after graduation from IEN. The graduates mainly choose to study at Macquarie University, University of Wollongong, University of Tasmania, Flinders University or Latrobe University in Australia. Most of them get their Masters’ Degrees and have a better future.
Abundant Accomplishments of Internationalized School Running Mode
By taking full advantage of the internationalized school running mode and building the international "talent overpass", IEN has provided its graduate students with many more chances and choices to further their study or find jobs. To date, IEN has trained 4500 students with skills in high demand worldwide and has transferred more than 1000 students to matriculate overseas. The passing rate of visa application is up to 96%. The majority of students have gone to Australia, the United States, England, New Zealand, Germany, Netherlands, France, and Switzerland and so on. More than 90% of the students study in world-renowned universities and most of them have received Masters’ Degrees and have a brilliant future. When Xi, Jinping, the General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee visited Australia in November, 2014, Xu Zhe who graduated from IEN in 2004 was interviewed by Xi and was invited to participate in the state banquet. Presently, IEN has been the largest Sino-Foreign cooperative institution in Fujian province and sent the most students aboard. IEN has received widespread praises from all walks of life because of its abundant academic accomplishments.
